At the time of this writing, there is a myriad of products and techniques that claim to re-grow hair. It’s actually mind-boggling – there are so many. In fact, the hair loss “industry” is a 3.6 billion dollar industry, and, according to GCIMagazine.com, it is expected to grow over the next few years to 2021. There is a multitude of reasons why and possible causes of hair loss, and the remedies, hair solutions, and techniques to deal with it can range anywhere from shampoos, topical solutions, vitamins, laser caps, and even “plucking.”
Yes, according to the post in the Daily Mail, a study was done where the researchers concluded that if you pluck a specific number of hairs out of one small patch area, you will, apparently, distress and fool your body into re-growing hair. In addition to these, there are also a myriad of other “solutions” that do not necessarily re-grow hair, but can range from masking hair loss with other topical remedies such as fiber products, hair extensions, wigs and hair-do techniques, or, might I even suggest, “acceptance.” But, let’s start at the beginning for those who wish to both keep what they have left and actually re-grow their hair.
Hair Loss Products Buyer’s Guide:
As mentioned, there are a number of reasons why people lose their hair, and there are various ways to go about re-growing it. But, since the reasons are so varied and can be related to health issues, you really need to be cautious, do your research, consult with your doctors and medical professionals before embarking on this journey to re-grow your hair – especially if you are on medication or you have an illness. If you cannot use some of the products listed below, or you have some sort of sensitivity to a particular product or ingredient, there are some other products that I came across that will help stimulate your hair follicles to get them to re-grow hair. Some of these methods may be slower in terms of results, but they may be more acceptable for certain people. These other methods are also included in this list. So, without further adieu, let’s get to it – shall we?
I’ve found that the most effective way to re-grow hair today is by using topically applied products that contain the most effective and FDA approved ingredient that has been proven to re-grow hair. So, basically, you only need to look for and find products that contain this one ingredient if you are serious about re-growing your hair.
The products that come up most often as the most effective in promoting hair growth in both men and women are those that contain the ingredient Minoxidil – plain and simple.
This ingredient works on hair thinning for women and hair loss for men and is usually dispensed in different strengths for each gender. As mentioned, this is the only ingredient that is topically applied which is currently FDA approved, and this ingredient has been proven in clinical studies to re-grow hair. The products that feature Minoxidil as the main active ingredient are widely available, and you can find many of these products in retail stores, supermarkets, and online. As mentioned, there are other products that do rely on clinical studies as well, and these will also be discussed later in this post.

According to Wikipedia.com, Minoxidil is a vasodilator – meaning that it expands blood vessels and increases blood supply. This process is the opposite of vasoconstriction, which is the narrowing of blood vessels. There are many foods that promote natural vasodilation which, in turn, also improves other aspects of living a healthy life, but that’s for yet another post… so, stay tuned! Minoxidil is generally tolerated by those who use it, but it may also cause negative side effects in some. So, again, it is wise to be cautious when using topically applied products with this ingredient.

Reading the reviews, many users have stated that it works, but the product is “runny.” One woman stated that It “helps to massage it into the scalp before it runs down your forehead” because she started seeing “peach fuzz” growing there and that “isn’t a good look.” All comedy aside, she also mentioned that this product, like the one for men, is an ongoing expense. In fact, for those who color their hair, this product may make your hair grow faster, so you’ll have to color your hair more often. And, finally, it’s a commitment. You have to keep buying it for a long-term solution, but many are generally happy with the results.
Provillus for Men and Provillus for Women:
Provillus for Men and Provillus for Women are not available in retail stores, and they are also not offered on Amazon or any e-commerce sites. They are only available online and direct from the manufacturer. Because of this, there are no independent product reviews or testimonials that I can find at the time of this writing. The only reviews and testimonials that I can find are those being offered by other Affiliate Marketers or the testimonials on the product page itself. Be that as it may, the product page advertisement does show that this product is very similar to Rogaine, but the company that makes this product offers a little more in the way of product offering and convenience. Provillus also offers supplements in addition to the topical solution, for a “one-two” punch, and an auto-ship option which many people may find to be very convenient.

Does Provillus work? Seeing that this product is similar to the others in that they contain the recommended dosages, I think it’s pretty safe to say that it works the same as the others. The reason it scored a bit higher is because this company offers a supplement and a few other benefits. They offer the convenience of monthly auto-ship, which many may find to be very convenient, and they also offer a free trial.
Nioxin Minoxidil for Men and Nioxin For Women
I believe that this product initially started out as a way to provide fuller volume for women’s thinning hair. At least, that’s what I can recall anyway. I know about Nioxin, personally, because I’ve used some of their initial products geared toward thickening and cleansing shampoos and conditioners. This is going way back now, but at that time, Amazon.. heck.. not even the internet existed back then! But, many women who have ever taken birth control pills certainly are aware, or should be anyway, of what those drugs do to your body. And, thinning hair is one such side effect that many women experience as a result of using oral contraceptives. So, my stylist, at that time, used some of the Nioxin cleanser and conditioner for fine hair. I remember that it had a very pleasant fragrance, and it made my scalp feel all tingly and clean. I really liked it and began buying it from the salon as that was the only place it was available.. at that time. I remember looking forward to shampooing because it felt like I was getting a Mint Julep for my head! In any case, life moved on, I moved away, and since the product was not widely available, I had stopped using it.
Now, in doing research for this post, I have come across this company’s products once again. And, I see they’ve expanded their line to include the topical solution for hair loss – similar to the other companies that also offer Minoxidil topical solutions. There is a Nioxin Minoxidil 5% Topical Solution available for men, and a Nioxin Minoxidil 2% Topical Solution for women. But, if you do choose to use this company’s Minoxidil products, you will have a number of other related hair products that have been around for a while. Their products do make your hair look very nice and thick, and you’ll be pleased with the scent too!

Similar to the products above, this product may not work for some. For those that did experience hair re-growth, they seem to be very pleased, and those who state they did not re-grow any hair are, of course, not too happy about it. Generally speaking, however, the review score is a positive 7 out of 10 which can only mean that this product works for many who have tried it.
Keranique for Women
Keranique is formulated for women only. Their products are geared for thinning hair and those who go through many hoops to get the look they desire. These hoops include coloring, bleaching, straightening, perming, and curling while using many types of heated irons, rollers, and dryers. All of these processes can wreak havoc on what was once healthy shiny hair.
From my research, the Keranique System is sold in kit form from the company site, and, from the review videos, usually includes the Hair Thinning Topical Solution – Minoxidil, along with various other related products such as a root stimulator, shampoo and conditioner. The Keranique System, when purchased from the company site, is also geared toward an auto-ship subscription similar to the Provillus products discussed above. However, you can purchase Keranique products alone or in a kit as they are available individually on Amazon.
This product is included in my list of Best Hair Loss Products because it does include the Topical Solution with Minoxidil. But, you can check to see if it made my “Best Of” list here: “Best Shampoos for Thinning Hair and Hair Loss.”
For now, here is what I would deem to be a quite authentic and believable review of the Keranique Hair Loss system.

As mentioned, Minoxidil does not work for everyone who uses it. In addition, some of the reviews may be from people who don’t understand or, perhaps, didn’t read the instructions carefully. First of all, the product will not make your hair fuller than it was when you were younger, nor will it work “instantly.” It will “only” re-grow hair that you’ve lost (if your follicles are still active), and this process does take some time. Secondly, during my research and viewing videos to choose for this post, many people who have used Minoxidil do understand that this ingredient “usually” does cause hair shedding at first. Apparently, this hair shedding phase happens because the product is stimulating the root, as it is supposed to do, and it causes the weak hair to fall out. So, perhaps, some users need to read the instructions a little more carefully and be a little more patient and realistic when using any product that contains Minoxidil.

Kerastase Densifique for Women
According to the official website, the Kerastase brand is a division of the L’Oreal company in Paris. It is a luxury salon brand targeting mainly women, but they now offer some products available for men. In the past, the only place a customer could purchase Kerastase was in a salon. Now, however, some of their products are now available in retail stores such as WalMart or online at Amazon.
Kerastase Densifique was this company’s version of 2% Minoxidil Hair Formula for Women. I have not found any Minoxidil Formula in the higher strength of 5% that is usually formulated for men. At the time of this writing, according to the official company website, this product has been discontinued. However, the 2% Minoxidil product is still available on Amazon through third-party sellers.
This company is also offering a hair and scalp treatment kit for thinning hair which has additives and vitamins for your hair. It is not known whether this company will again offer Minoxidil products for either men or women in the future.

There are only 7 reviews on Amazon for the 2% Minoxidil for Women. Of those, there are, obviously, some who say it works, and some who state it didn’t work at all. There is also a comment from one other person reminding women that this product has the exact same ingredients as the store-brands. There are no additives what-so-ever to justify this incredible price point. Those who do purchase it are paying a premium price for prettier packaging and a brand name, but with the same ingredients: 60% alcohol, 2% Minoxidil, Propylene Glycol, and Water.
So, if you’re into prettier packaging with a luxury salon name brand, and you have no problem wasting (ahem) …spending the extra money, you can check out the latest price on Amazon here:
Regenepure 5% Minoxidil for Men and 5% Minoxidil for Women
This, again, is similar to all those discussed above in that it provides a Minoxidil Topical Solution to treat hair loss. However, this company is offering it with a few twists. First, you may have noticed that the Title says 5% for Women, and, no, that’s not a typo. This company is offering this product in a 5% strength for women – which, for all intents and purposes, goes against all that I have read so far about Minoxidil and its use by women. The 2% strength, according to many sources, is more than enough for women’s thinning hair (as opposed to complete bald areas), and the lower 2% strength is less likely to mess up a woman’s endocrine system, hormones, etc. So, this is a bit baffling to me that this company is offering their Regenepure Minoxidil for women at 5%. It’s also a bit odd that the packaging states “not for use by men” on the front. Conversely, on the Regenepure Minoxidil for men, the packaging states that this product is “not for use by women” on its front. So, I’m not sure what this company is doing because they’re effectively marketing the very same product for both genders quite blatantly, but if you are a woman who is considering this product, it would be wise to speak with your doctor first. And, if you are a woman and you do proceed in purchasing the 5% formula, then just be aware of the price they are charging for the same exact product they market to men.
The other twist is that it comes in a 2 oz. mist spray bottle to help men and women target specific bald or thinning spots and allow a more even delivery. This can be a plus for many users who just don’t like the eye dropper applicator that other companies include. This company also offers a suite of related products. So, if you are more inclined to use their related suite of products and you would rather use a spray applicator to apply the Minoxidil directly to your scalp, thinned area or bald spot area, then, this is the product for you.

Many reviews state that this product is working as it should, but many others are reporting in too soon without any further updates. Quite a few have mentioned the spray applicator and that they like this better than the typical dropper that comes with other Minoxidil Topical Solution products, but they also cite the need to keep it capped and closed to help reduce spills and to also avoid the possibility of the product drying up inside the nozzle.

NutraStim 5% and 2% Minoxidil Formulas for Men and Women
NutraStim makes a number of products to treat both hair loss and hair thinning, and offers Minoxidil in both strengths: 5% for men and 2% for women. The Minoxidil Topical Solution product claims to be safe for those with sensitive skin, and they offer the ingredients as follows: 2% or 5% Minoxidil for either the NutraStim Minoxidil Women’s formula or the NutraStim Minoxidil Men’s formula, respectively. The inactive ingredients are Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, and Purified Water. The packaging is similar to those above in that it comes in 2 oz. bottles with a dropper applicator.
The Pros & Cons are very similar to previous products with one major exception. Some of these products only have two bottles for a two month supply. This is important when comparing prices.
Overall Scores: 7 stars out of 10 for Men / 6 out of 10 for Women
Although the number of reviews is less than those received for some of the more well-known brands, the reviews for this product are very good. Many cite the fact that they are growing their hair, and they are very happy with this purchase.

The remaining Minoxidil Formulas listed are all very similar. They are either store-brands or very basic product offerings that mimic the name brands already discussed. The Pros and Cons Summary for the generics is at the end of this whole section.
Generic Store Brands – Minoxidil Formulas for Men and Women
As you may know, many stores offer generic versions of over the counter (OTC) products, and Minoxidil Formulas are no different. You will find store-brand generics alongside the better-known name brand hair products on any given shelf. The difference, of course, is brand name recognition resulting from brand name hair loss marketing and advertising efforts.
For more info on store-brand generics, you may want to check out this company, Perrigo, which manufactures many store brand generics including “Kirkland,” “Basic Care,” and “GoodSense,” all of which are available on Amazon. Kirkland’s Minoxidil Formula is discussed below. Another casual mention is Actavis, another generic brand being offered on Amazon. Actavis Generics is a pharmaceutical company which makes a generic Minoxidil Formula for men, and it comes in two strengths: a 5% formula and a 2% formula. Both packages are clearly marked “for men” which means that they are targeting men with the 2% strength probably to help reduce irritation for those with just thinning hair as opposed to those with completely bald areas. The Actavis Minoxidil product only had three (3) reviews, but it scored the highest. This product is a cheaper alternative to the name brands that have the exact same basic ingredients.

Sorry ladies, this one is also geared for men seeing that I simply cannot find it in the recommended dose for thinning hair in Women, which is 2%. Kirkland Minoxidil for men is yet another product with the effective ingredient 5% Minoxidil. This product is available on Amazon in various supply sizes including boxes with up to a six months supply at pretty affordable prices. Obviously, it offers the same benefits where it helps re-grow hair in 2 to 4 months of consistent use.

The majority of users who left reviews are very happy with both the effects of this product as well as the price. There are, of course, some who did not experience hair growth, but the majority have within the 4-month average time-frame. Many comments are from men who are using it, and, though not its intended use, some men are even using it on their beard! Many have cited the price, and have stated they will keep ordering and using this product long-term.
One note, however, that I would also like to mention regarding Minoxidil. One user mentioned that he thought this product caused heart palpitations and other negative effects. For this reason, I have enlarged the images of the box that I obtained to allow readers to read the label themselves. You will find that page by clicking the image shown just above. Equate began as an independent company offering up products very similar to name brand products only without the expensive name attached to it. These products were offered for much less than their name brand competitors. However, this brand has now become one of WalMart’s store brands when WalMart acquired the company. So, what does this mean to you? Well, according to “the Food and Drug Administration, generic drugs are required to have the same active ingredient, strength, and dosage as the brand-name product.” (Source: CBSNews.com) And, this translates to pretty much the same product as a brand name product – only being offered for less.
Overall Score: 7 out of 10
The reviews speak for themselves. Similar to the name brand reviews, some reviews complain that Equate Men’s Formula is “runny.” Some have complained about the packaging or the condition the box is in when it arrives. Perhaps, since it is a store brand, the manufacturing process is less precise in its packaging, or perhaps, its quality control efforts are lacking somewhere along the line. But, one thing is for sure, the review scores are very similar to the brand name Hair Loss Minoxidil topical solution products, and many reviews cite both the “cheaper price” as well as the results. “It works!”

The same holds true for Walgreen’s Minoxidil Formula and a number of other stores that also offer “Store Brand” generics. In this instance, Walgreens also carries Minoxidil topical solution products as well as the foam products for both men and women, and are also priced less than their name brand competitors. So, bottom line, if price is an issue, and you are not looking for any “additives” such as those in the Keranique System (above), you may want to try out a store-brand generic hair loss Minoxidil product before plunking down more cash to buy a name brand.

Although there are some third-party sellers who are selling Walgreen’s Store Brand Minoxidil Formula for both men and women, there are no reviews at the time of this writing. Therefore, I will simply state that, according to the labeling, these two products offer the same percentage of Minoxidil for both men and women but without any other hair vitamins or additives for colored or damaged hair (such as the Keranique System). Customers who do purchase and use these products should read and follow the directions inside each box, and heed the warnings related to all the previously discussed Minoxidil products in this post. As always, if you have any other questions or concerns, you should always seek advice from your medical professional.

Propecia – Oral Drug by Merck – Casual Mention
No, this drug did not make my “Best Of” list, but, since it is prescribed by many doctors to help minimize hair loss, I thought I’d at least mention it. According to various sources, this drug inhibits DHT, the very chemical that occurs naturally in men’s scalps which, in turn, causes Male Pattern Baldness. However, this drug comes with numerous and negative side-effects that can be extremely detrimental to the health of men who take this drug even after they stop taking it. For this reason, I thought it best to give it a casual mention.
Obviously, this is a prescription drug, and therefore, it is not available on Amazon anyway. But, if you are interested in this possible solution to your hair loss, you’d be wise to do your due diligence and find out all that you can before discussing it with your doctor and before you begin using it.

The reason I scored the hands-free laser type helmets and caps higher than the laser combs are for that very reason. You can definitely sit down and do something else while you are getting your laser treatment, unlike the laser comb where you have to keep the comb moving and stroking your hair, head, and scalp.
iGrow Laser Hair Growth Helmet
This product is very simplistic in design, and some have even stated that this product makes you look like some sort of Robocop. But, who cares, really? It’s yet another discreet way to get your laser treatment in the privacy of your own home. And, with the built-in earphones, you can even listen to music for the 20 minute recommended treatment. This product also has a safety feature in that it turns itself to “pause,” when/if it’s removed from your head while it’s turned on. The lasers go off automatically. It’s also lightweight, and, according to many people who have used it, feel absolutely no pain or discomfort. This company also offers various versions of their helmet, similar to the iGrow competitor. Pro Nu Hair Laser Helmet
This product is similar to the others, is also FDA Cleared, and is wireless. It has 80 diodes and boasts a 97% effective rate from its users.
Illumiflow Laser Helmet
This helmet is also FDA Cleared, has 272 diodes, and also works with a rechargeable battery that allows you to do whatever you wish without being tethered in one spot. It weighs less than half a pound, and it has an auto-shut off as well. The recommended time is between 15 and 30 minutes every other day.
The majority of reviews state that it does work, and it’s much easier to use than constantly stroking your hair with a laser comb. Many also like the price when compared to competitor’s hair growth laser products. But, negative reviews also state that this product is inflexible, doesn’t fit well, and it’s uncomfortable. One woman stated it feels like a hard bowl sitting on top of your head, and a few returned it for that reason.
iHelmet
This product has a twist! The iHelmet has 200 diodes, but they can be controlled into specific focus areas to increase effectiveness on problem areas. In addition – “there’s an App for that!” Yes, this product is controlled by an app on your phone which allows you to control it or obtain information. It also reminds you when to use it, and provides other data to you as well.
Laser Cap GrivaMax Pro 272
This strong competitor is, of course, also FDA Cleared and has 272 diodes. It also has a rechargeable battery with a leather clip-on case that you clip to your belt while wearing it to allow you the freedom to move around. This product also gives its measurements: The width of 6.69 inches, length 7.48 inch, depth 3.15 inch.
The reviews are stellar, but while many are extremely positive about this product, some do remind those who are considering this purchase that it “does take time.” One person stated he was ready to give up after a year but was persuaded to keep at it. Now, he’s glad he did, as the product is working as it claims. One other thing I noticed when reviewing this product is that this ballcap that comes with it seems large enough and inconspicuous enough to wear outside. It doesn’t look awkward like some of the other hair laser helmet products. If you tuck the cord down the back and inside a jacket, it is less noticeable. I think the highest score of 9 out of 10 after considering all of the above methods is justified simply because using an LLLT cap does not stop you from using additional methods. These devices are non-intrusive, can be discreet, they do not stop you from doing other things, and one even comes with headphones! They are not messy to use, and they are pretty safe to use. Some even automatically shut off when the cap is not positioned on a person’s head. While, yes, these may not work on all who use them, they are showing promise and results if they are used early enough in the process of losing one’s hair.
Conclusion:
While there is no 100% way to effectively grow hair as fast as people may want it (seemingly overnight for some!), there are time-tested treatments to stop and reverse hair loss and newer innovations as well which help to re-grow hair. Obviously, the time-tested methods include the prescribed drug, Propecia, and the topical solution containing Minoxidil. But, while those may work, there are some who just want a more natural way to induce hair growth. We now have technological advances that allow for portable laser treatments that are non-surgical and safe to use. These newer methods are clinically proven, involve no drugs either orally or topically applied, and many people do grow or thicken their thin hair. The best part of the laser helmets is that they are pretty convenient to use. You can use these devices in the privacy of your home, or discreetly under a ball type of cap. I think the best part is that the use of laser helmets do not prohibit you from using the other methods as well. So, if you are losing your hair, have lost your hair, but not to the point where there are no follicles left, these methods discussed above are all pretty safe and effective ways to go about growing back your beautiful hair without going through a hair-transplant procedure.

Seeing that the price differs greatly among them, and considering that these devices do not guarantee 100% re-growth, we are going to stop short of choosing just one. Results do vary, and they also vary depending on how often the user wears them. Some answers to valid questions are just not obtainable, and those who are considering purchasing one would have to ask themselves: Do other users who have provided reviews wear the devices long enough, are they committed to pursuing this therapy treatment on a daily basis or is their use more occasional. Are they being reasonable, or do they think they should look like Fabio after only a week of consistent use? All these questions and factors combined do affect results. Savvy marketers are appealing to those women who long for full luscious hair and are willing to pay extra for it. So, ladies, don’t be fooled out of your hard-earned money. Please don’t pay more for this “pretty” product that’s being marketed to you as an ultra-luxurious hair salon product when it has the exact same ingredients as many of the others – including the store-brand generics.
And, finally, for those people who do wish to re-grow their hair, some of these methods are worth a try for sure. Many are quite affordable, but, again, it is a subjective decision where only you can decide. You just have to ask your self one question when considering trying one of the above hair loss products to re-grow your hair – “What have you got to lose?” 🙂
